A wall of fish gliding through a large aquarium makes an unusually good backdrop for lunch. At Hemingway’s Blue Water Cafe, inside the Springfield Bass Pro Shops flagship store, the bar sits near the tank, and the soft sound of a waterfall carries through a dining room built around lodge-style comfort.
This is a restaurant that fits naturally into a bigger afternoon. You can browse rods, boats, outdoor gear and the sprawling store displays, then settle in for fish and chips, a bison burger or a steak without leaving the complex.
The room has an old-world, outdoorsy character rather than the brisk, interchangeable look of a typical store restaurant. Big-game and lodge-inspired décor, along with a fireplace, give the place a comfortable place-to-pause quality.
An Aquarium Table Distraction
For families, the aquarium can occupy young diners long enough for everybody else to take a breath and look over the menu. The tank holds an assortment of fish, and on some visits a diver may be visible tending to the interior.
Adults get their own benefit from the setting: it gives the meal a visual focal point without making conversation difficult. The dining room has a relaxed, easy-to-talk-in atmosphere that works for a vacation lunch, a casual dinner or a professional meal with colleagues.
The larger Bass Pro environment adds another layer of water-world scenery. In parts of the surrounding store, the ceiling is decorated to suggest the view from beneath a lake’s surface, an amusing bit of theatricality on the way to or from the table.
A Menu That Goes Well Beyond Fish
Seafood is a major reason to come, with mahi-mahi, trout, salmon, shrimp, crab, halibut and redfish appearing among the choices. But the menu is broad enough that a table can split between seafood plates, sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups, appetizers and steaks.
The bison burger is one of the recurring orders and a sensible choice for someone who wants to try something a little different from the usual beef burger without committing to a full game-meat sampler. It can also be kept very simple; a plain version with minimal toppings has been accommodated for a child.
Fish and chips is another familiar anchor, known for a notably generous portion. It is the sort of order that makes sense when one person wants the straightforward comfort-food option while somebody else is studying the more adventurous side of the menu.
Mahi-Mahi, Trout and Redfish
The Islamorada Pomerano brings together mahi-mahi, shrimp and lobster sauce, a richer seafood plate than a simple grilled fish fillet. It offers a useful middle ground for diners who want more than a sandwich but do not want to build a meal around steak or game.
Redfish comes with crab, potatoes and green beans, putting a few different textures on the plate without sending the meal in an overly elaborate direction. Almond trout has also appeared with sweet potato fries and a Caesar salad, a pleasant combination of crisp, sweet and savory sides.
Other seafood routes include grilled shrimp tacos, salmon, halibut and a blackened mahi-mahi sandwich served on a bun. The latter is especially good for the diner who likes assertive seasoning but still wants lunch to arrive in sandwich form.
A Little Game on the Appetizer List
Hemingway’s has enough game-meat offerings to keep the menu from reading like a standard seafood-house list. The Big Game Sampler combines coconut shrimp, bacon-wrapped duck poppers and elk sliders, making it a practical sharing plate for a table interested in trying several things.
Duck poppers are among the restaurant’s more distinctive snacks. Their serving is smaller than some of the restaurant’s larger entrées, but they are a fun place to start when the group wants a taste of something outside the usual chicken wings and mozzarella sticks.
Alligator bites go farther down that road. They have been described as dark meat with a chicken-like texture and a fried flavor that recalls clams, which gives curious first-timers a better idea of what is on the plate than the name alone.
Fried pickles are available for diners who would rather keep the appetizer familiar. It is a useful reminder that the menu does not require anyone at the table to turn lunch into an expedition.
Steak, Sides and Cobbler
A KC strip gives non-seafood diners a full steakhouse-style option, and it can be prepared to the requested preference. Yukon mashed potatoes deserve notice as a side dish rather than merely a space-filler on the plate.
Then there is the peach cobbler, a recurring favorite for good reason. The crust is tender, and the sweetness stays measured rather than piling on after a substantial meal.
That balance is helpful here. The menu can encourage a table to order widely—seafood, game, burgers and starters all in one sitting—so a dessert that is comforting without being overwhelmingly rich has its place.
Build It Into a Bass Pro Afternoon
Hemingway’s makes the most sense as a stopping point in the middle of a Bass Pro Shops visit. The surrounding complex includes museum-style attractions devoted to fishing, historic weapons and the story of Bass Pro Shops, so a meal can break up a day that otherwise involves a good deal of browsing and looking.
Some weapons displays include pieces associated with films, including The Outlaw Josey Wales. That gives the outing a few unexpected turns beyond fishing tackle and camouflage clothing.
The restaurant is also a useful reset after time on the sales floor. Sit down, order a drink and let the waterfall sounds and aquarium movement replace the more energetic pace of the store for an hour.
Easy Logistics for Mixed Groups
The Springfield Bass Pro Shops location has a free parking lot with ample space, a welcome convenience for a destination that may draw families, travelers and larger groups. Hemingway’s has handled everything from smaller parties to a group of 15, and the menu provides enough range for a mixed crowd.
Service is generally attentive without hovering. Staff members have been known to offer menu guidance, keep meals moving for family lunches and check back at a comfortable interval.
A small gesture says plenty about the tone of a place: after a child left behind a stuffed animal, the restaurant helped recover it and mail it home. That sort of care fits a dining room designed for people who may have arrived with shopping bags, tired feet and a full day still unfolding.
