A plate of scotch eggs and a flight of five beers make a convincing argument for taking the slower road outside Broken Bow. Kinkaider Brewing Co., the original Kinkaider brewery, sits roughly 10 to 12 minutes from the town’s main commercial area, with more room to spread out than a typical roadside taproom.

This is a place to settle into rather than dash through. Beer, food, open lawn, sand volleyball courts and a broad patio turn a stop for lunch into an afternoon that can stretch pleasantly toward sunset.

A Nebraska Beer Lineup With Room to Explore

Kinkaider pours a wide range of its Nebraska-made beers on tap, including wheat and pale wheat beers, amber styles and Oktoberfest offerings. The lineup has a reputation for being bold and varied, rather than a row of near-identical pours with different names.

A five-beer flight is a useful way to get acquainted before committing to a pint. Among the beers that have appeared on the list are Toasted Wheet, Bootleg Brewers Cling On, and selections with jalapeño or grapefruit flavors. It is a good setup for a table where everybody wants to compare notes.

Beer does not have to carry the whole visit. The drink program also reaches into Nebraska spirits associated with a Lincoln distillery, along with bourbon, canned cocktails and house-made root beer. The root beer gives younger diners, designated drivers and anyone taking a break from hops a proper glass-in-hand option.

Start With the Scotch Eggs

The scotch eggs are one of those menu items worth ordering because they are not an everyday pub default. They have made enough of an impression to inspire a return detour off Interstate 80, which says plenty for a dish built around a simple old-fashioned idea.

Onion rings and cheese curds make a natural opening round for the table. Beer-battered fries come up often, too, especially with the homemade ranch alongside them. These are sturdy, shareable starters for people who intend to stay awhile.

The Menu Goes Well Beyond Bar Snacks

The food is built around substantial pub-style meals. Burgers, brisket nachos, ribs and pork-belly macaroni and cheese give the tap list some serious competition, and the menu has enough range for a group that is not all ordering the same thing.

Burger choices have included a jalapeño burger, Swiss mushroom burger, a patty melt on marbled rye, a classic burger and a jalapeño-popper-style version. A child-sized burger and fries paired with house-made root beer makes the family angle easy to picture without turning the meal into a kids-only outing.

Other dishes that have appeared include a steak Philly sandwich, bratwurst, chicken-fried steak, salmon wedge salad and a brisket grilled cheese. Sweet-and-spicy boneless wings and chicken-bacon-ranch flatbread offer two more routes for a casual meal with drinks.

A Patio With Actual Elbow Room

Outdoors, the brewery opens onto a large patio or deck surrounded by green space. At least part of the patio is covered, a useful detail when rain moves through but sitting outside still sounds better than heading indoors.

The lawn is kept soft and tidy around the recreation areas, with two sand volleyball courts and room for bags and dancing. A small automated lawn mower working across the back yard has even become a minor source of entertainment—the sort of practical little machine that can hold a surprising amount of attention.

The setting is especially pleasant later in the day, when the open grounds give the place a quieter, scenic feel. There is also a children’s playground, so a family meal need not mean everyone remains in one seat from appetizer to check.

For Groups, Road Trips and Dog Owners

Kinkaider fits several different sorts of outings without needing to change its character. It works for a brewery-focused afternoon, a motorcycle ride stop, a family dinner, or a gathering where some people want to eat while others would rather head toward the volleyball courts.

Dogs have been accommodated in the outdoor seating area, though patio space can depend on the day and may be unavailable during private events such as weddings. The covered deck and wide grounds are a stronger draw when outdoor tables are open.

Beer can continue the road trip after the meal: the brewery sells beer to take home, and bourbon has also been available for purchase. Current drink selections are worth checking in person, since tap lists and packaged offerings naturally change.

A Look Behind the Brewing

The production side adds another layer to the stop. Staff and brewery representatives have at times given personal tours through the facility, including detailed walks through the brewing areas rather than a quick glance from a distance.

Tour availability is not something to count on as a daily feature; it has not been operating on every visit. Still, it is worth confirming ahead of time if seeing the brewhouse is central to your plans.

When One Stop Becomes an Overnight

The property has also functioned as an overnight stop through Harvest Hosts, and it has a destination bungalow for stays on the grounds. Both arrangements should be verified before building a trip around them, but they help explain why the brewery can feel more like a rural destination than a quick pint near town.

For a simple visit, though, the formula is already complete: try a flight, order the scotch eggs or a burger, and let the patio and lawn set the pace.
